Multiple Perspectives
Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian explores several complex and complicated topics through the perspective of Arthur, a Spokane fourteen year-old Indian living on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Arthur encounters countless challenges when he decides to leave his school on the reservation for an all-white school in Reardon. Poverty, alcoholism, and the repercussions of choosing a better life are only some of the challenges Arthur confronts with sharp wit, cartoons, and hope. Each of these issues deserves to be examined in further detail. This selection relates to Alexie’s passionate article, Why the Best Kid’s Books Are Written in Blood (2011).
